This FDR campaign pin, which was purchased on eBay, has a little donkey dangling by a silk cord. Dozens of these donkeys were warehoused for 60 years and appeared several years ago for sale on eBay. I bought a bunch of them with the cords still attached, knowing only that they were old and would make nice necklaces for Democrats to wear to political events. The seller thought they were from the 1920s or '30s, but he had no idea what they were used for. When I found this campaign pin later in another eBay auction, I immediately recognized the donkey and finally knew that the ones I had bought earlier must have come from a Democratic Convention in the '30s or '40s--one of Roosevelt's four campaigns for president. I later discovered that this particular pin came from Roosevelt's last presidential campaign in 1944.
The jewelry on this page incorporates the 64-year-old donkeys into new designs combining them with handmade polymer clay hearts or stars and wooden beads. The donkeys are made of some early form of plastic--celluloid maybe--over a chalky material. They have all been sealed with a high gloss varnish to preserve them. Some have been given a gray finish, and some have been left their original beige color with few touchups here and there.
The necklaces were very popular at the 2004 Texas Democratic Convention. I only have a few necklaces left and the donkeys and beads to make a few more. The donkeys are not for sale separately, and the Roosevelt campaign pin is a part of my own collection and is not for sale.
